Chinese activist disabled by prison abuse sentenced again

On Tuesday, a Beijing court sentenced her and her husband Dong Jiqin to two years eight months and two years, respectively. They were detained a year ago in a crackdown on activists, and charged with fraud and "causing trouble" at a hotel where they were held.

A Chinese lawyer and activist who battled on behalf of residents who were losing their homes to construction for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison by a Beijing court on Tuesday, reportedly on charges of fraud and causing a disturbance, Reuters reported.

Ni Yulan 51, was tried with her husband Dong Jiqin. Both were both arrested in April 2011. Dong was sentenced to two years in jail.

Ni?s daughter Dong Xuan said Ni attended her court appearance lying on a bed with an oxygen supply, according to a report in the Global Post. Ni is confined to a wheel chair and suffers other health problems that she says were caused by at the hands of police during two previous jail terms.

Ni had been an outspoken advocate for citizens forced to leave their homes to make way for development and provided what she argued was grossly inadequate compensation for the sacrifice. She lost her own home this way, so she camped in a tent in a public park for a time, The Global Post reported.

Ni and Dong were arrested in April 2011 in a government crackdown apparently aimed at averting an Arab Spring-like uprising in China.

Tuesday's?sentences are another signal that the Communist party remains wary of the country's nascent civil rights movement.

In December Chen Xi, a veteran of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, was sentenced by a Guizhou court to 10 years for "subversion" for his persistent calls for human rights, and highlighting growing inequity in Chinese society.

Writer Chen Wei, was sentenced in December to nine years for a series of articles he published on the Internet between 2009 and 2011 calling for greater freedom of expression in China and reform of the one-party Communist system.

Upon sentencing Chen, 42, stood up in court and shouted: "Democracy and constitutional government will triumph! The dictatorship with fall!" Radio Free Asia reported.??

NY Easter Parade showcases colorful headgear

New York City's annual Easter Parade drew both
the faithful and the fun-loving Sunday.

Thousands of people filled a traffic-free Fifth Avenue, many decked out creatively for the freewheeling gathering, a secular way to mark the holiest day on the Christian calendar.

"This was his Halloween costume, but don't tell him that!" a smiling Karen Stillpass said of the bumblebee coat on her dog, a Westie named Seymour. "He doesn't know his mommy was too cheap to buy him an Easter costume."

There were dozens of dogs wearing fluffy bunny ears, as were many people, including Stillpass, 62, her pink bunny ears bobbing in the balmy spring air.

The parade started in the 1870s as a spontaneous showcase for the finery that prosperous New Yorkers wore to church. It's now a showcase of outlandish attire, with a few traditional bonnets.

On Sunday, 17-year-old Zach Karle donned a Roman centurion helmet with a red horsehair plume, purchased years ago in England.

"I didn't want to do the bunny thing," the teenager said, deadpanning, "How is this not perfect for Easter?"

Some used the parade as a chance to promote their causes.

In the middle of Fifth Avenue, a white cat named Whitney lounged in a lacy bed of lavender velvet on the knees of her owner, Mary Walsh, next to a sign encouraging people to neuter pets so they don't end up in shelters. Walsh adopted 1-year-old Whitney from one.

"We're celebrating my birthday a day early!" said Walsh, who turns 70 on Monday.

The Babylon resident wore her Irish grandmother's white lace wedding dress, with a pale pink tulle chapeau she said she got in her native Ireland.

A block up the avenue, Jason Ruybe sported a white tuxedo with red hearts while making balloons for children, in return for donations to Hearts of Joy, a New York charity that brings entertainment to sick and underprivileged children.

Here and there, parade participants tipped their hats to elegant tradition.

Nathan Steinberg, a retired hardware store owner from Orange, Mass., posed in a classic gray top hat and tux to match the turn-of-the-century style of his wife, Rose Marie Thomas, who sewed her own long satin fuchsia dress and hat.

"We've been coming for 18 years, and I make a different color dress every year," said Thomas. "The late 1800s is my favorite era."

Nearby, Barry Brown and his friends portrayed the signs of the Zodiac.

Brown, 40, of Jersey City, N.J., who works in nonprofit finance, pointed to his over-the-top head sculpture depicting Virgo: a virgin with long black tresses standing over huge plastic hands that circled his hat, each wearing what he called "rings of abstinence."

"This is my church," he said with a grin.

Weather causes baseball, softball cancellations

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A weather forecast that calls for possible severe weather has resulted in two early cancellations on Thursday.

CVCC's baseball game with Central Alabama, originally scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET, has been pushed back a day to Friday at the same time. This is a key contest for the Pirates (22-17, 8-8 ACCC Central), who are just one game out of second in the Central Division. Central Alabama (29-5, 15-1 ACCC Central) leads the division.

Also scratched because of the weather is the softball game between Columbus State and Georgia College. No makeup date has been announced.?

The Lady Cougars will take the next two days off before taking on Georgia Southwestern on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET in Americus.?
