Israeli airstrike targets Hamas camps in Gaza
Israeli aircraft attacked three Hamas training camps in the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, causing no injuries, eyewitnesses in the enclave said.
An Israeli helicopter fired six missiles at two different sites northwest of Gaza city, both training camps for Hamas's military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, eyewitnesses said.
In addition, an Israeli aircraft fired four rockets at a Qassam training camp south of Gaza City, according to sources in Gaza.
There were no injuries in any of the attacks.
The Israeli military confirmed the strikes on the northern Gaza Strip, without mentioning the third one.
In a statement, the army said its "aircraft targeted two sites -- a weapon manufacturing site and a weapon storage facility in the northern Gaza Strip."
"Direct hits were confirmed. The sites were targeted in response to the continuous rocket fire towards southern Israel," the statement read.
On Monday, Gaza militants fired three mortars that hit southern Israel, causing no damages or injuries.
And on Sunday, two factories in the southern Israeli city Sderot were damaged by rockets. A Salafist group from Gaza, Mujahedeen Shura Council, assumed responsibility for that attack.
Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has maintained a tacit truce with Israel, but other armed Palestinian groups regularly fire rockets and mortars across the border, which can spark air strikes in response.
Tensions regularly flare along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, with Palestinian militants firing rockets into the Jewish state and the Israeli military launching retaliatory air strikes on the Palestinian territory.
The last major flare-up was in June when militants fired more than 150 rockets at southern Israel, wounding five people, and Israel hit back with air strikes which killed 15 Palestinians.

Fed easing hopes lift shares, weighs on dollar
LONDON (Reuters) - Signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve that another dose of stimulus measures could come "fairly soon" lifted global shares on Thursday and pushed the dollar to a two-month low, outweighing poor economic data from China.
European shares, which are up over 15 percent since June and have been driving the steady 11.5 percent rise in global stocks, rose 0.5 percent in early trading. Indexes in London <.ftse>, Frankfurt <.dax> and Paris <.fchi> were all higher.
The euro, which has been boosted in recent weeks by hopes that a new bond buying-led plan being drawn up by the European Central Bank will overcome the currency bloc's debt troubles, was at a seven-week high against the dollar at $1.2536.
The dollar sank to a two-month low versus a broader basket of currencies. Behind the move was the Federal Reserve's signal on Wednesday that more policy easing is likely to be on the way, a move that will pump more dollars into the financial system.
Minutes from the U.S. central bank's meeting earlier in the month said: "Many (Fed) members judged that additional monetary accommodation would likely be warranted fairly soon unless incoming information pointed to a substantial and sustainable strengthening in the pace of the economic recovery."
"The market seems more interested in more prospects of stimulus from the Fed than worries over the euro crisis. In the short term, the market could get back up to the highs which we've seen in the last few weeks," said Darren Easton, director of trading at London-based Logic Investments.
The markets also seemed more interested in Fed signals than the fact that Chinese manufacturing PMI data hit their lowest levels since November as new export orders slumped and the stock of unsold goods rose.
Germany will release updated second quarter GDP numbers later, while euro zone PMI data will give the latest reading of economic confidence in the currency bloc.
Meetings between Greece and key euro zone leaders will continue, with Greece's prime minister heading to Berlin to see German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday and French President Francois Hollande on Saturday.
European bond markets were choppy in early trading. German government bond futures opened in demand, up 13 ticks, tracking the move in U.S. bonds.

Belarus dissident fighting extradition by Ecuador
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) ? Less than a year ago, an Ecuadorean judge denied a request to extradite Aliaksandr Barankov to Belarus, the former Soviet bloc nation whose president has been nicknamed "Europe's last dictator."
But now, the former financial crimes investigator is in imminent danger of losing his political refugee status and being sent home, where he says he could be killed because he unearthed corruption at the highest levels of government.
Barankov's fate could be decided as early as Tuesday, less than a week after Ecuador granted political asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, painting itself a proud haven for the politically persecuted.
The Belarusian's case indicates that hospitality may be limited by geopolitics.
Prosecutors in Belarus accuse the 30-year-old Barankov of fraud and extortion. He calls the charges bogus, retribution for his having exposed a petroleum-smuggling ring involving senior officials of President Alexander Lukashenko's government, including relatives of the leader.
Barankov is backed by rights activists at home, where Lukashenko has ruled for 18 years by fixing elections, quashing free speech, jailing dissidents and keeping 80 percent of industry in state hands.
"They accuse me of fraud and corruption," Barankov said by phone from prison Friday. "It's easy to accuse (someone) of this because the police, courts and prosecutor's office are employees of the president and his family."
Barankov arrived in Ecuador in August 2009 after fleeing the charges, which he said were filed after he uncovered the smuggling ring. Belarus has been trying to extradite him ever since.
In 2010, when he overstayed his visa, he was imprisoned for 55 days but was freed after authorities granted him refugee status, finding merit in his claim of political persecution.
Belarus continued to press for his extradition, but Judge Carlos Ramirez of Ecuador's highest court, the National Court of Justice, denied it in October 2011, finding the evidence of Barankov's alleged crimes inadequate.
Then, on June 7, after a revised extradition request from Belarus, Barankov was arrested by 15 police officers who hauled him from his home in a middle-class neighborhood of northern Quito.
Later that month, Lukashenko visited Ecuador for two days, signing agreements on trade, education, agriculture and the eventual exchange of diplomats with President Rafael Correa. A preliminary defense cooperation agreement was also signed. Under Correa, Ecuador has been deepening commercial and political ties with U.S. rivals including Iran, Russia and China.
"Everything changed after Lukashenko came," Barankov said by phone from Quito's cold, overcrowded century-old Prison No. 1. "I want Ecuadoreans to open their eyes and see what's happening to me."
An official at the National Court of Justice said that Ramirez could rule as early as Tuesday on the new extradition request and that Barankov could lose despite his refugee status.
It would then be up to Correa to decide whether he is extradited.
A phone call to the presidential press office Monday seeking comment was not returned. Nor were calls to the Justice Ministry and Foreign Ministry seeking clarification for why the government was allowing the extradition to go forward.
"He cannot be condemned to death or to life in prison because there is a signed guarantee from the Belarusian government that assures us of this. The guarantee was delivered during Lukashenko's visit," said the court official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The official was not authorized to make statements to the press.
Barankov's Ecuadorean girlfriend, Mabel Andrade, told The Associated Press: "We were more or less relaxed until President Lukashenko came. Immediately afterward, Ecuadorean authorities didn't want to renew his ID card and they wouldn't give us any explanation."
She said they had appealed to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, arguing a fear of torture or even death.
Ecuadorean court records confirm that Barankov was a financial crimes investigator.
In the Belarusian capital of Minsk, an Interior Ministry official said Barankov was a former police officer but refused to say what job or responsibilities he had. The official, who refused to be quoted by name, said Barankov was accused of summoning random people to his office, telling them they were being investigated and extorting bribes to close non-existent cases.
The Ecuadorean court papers say he allegedly attempted to extort employees of Total Oil, demanding payments of up to $60,000 on at least eight occasions.
Yelena Krasovskaya-Kasperovich from the Minsk-based human rights organization Platforma told the AP that Barankov asked for the group's help and that they had spoken to him several times via Skype.
She said Barankov "didn't say a word about the nature of the secrets he's in possession of." He only said that the information he has is "explosive" and concerns Belarusian senior officials, she said.
"The persistence with which Belarusian authorities are demanding Barankov's extradition is alarming," Krasovskaya-Kasperovich said. "This might be the proof that he does know Lukashenko's secrets."
"In this case, it's very dangerous for him to be in Belarus," she said.

Optimism on Greece, ECB, lifts European shares
LONDON (Reuters) - European shares and the euro edged higher on Tuesday on optimism that meetings on Greece's future and a strategy being drawn up by the European Central Bank will lead to progress in solving the euro zone debt crisis.
European shares, which have risen 16 percent since June, opened up 0.2 percent, with the main indexes in London Paris and Frankfurt safely in positive territory.
After modest rises in Asia and a flat finish on Wall Street, the MSCI global share index was up 0.14 percent at 0715 GMT while the euro rose 0.15 percent versus the dollar with smaller gains also against the yen and sterling.
"The dollar is weaker versus the euro ahead of the key meetings this week that may provide clarity on both the immediate outlook for Greece and the outlook in regard to the ECB's plan to buy sovereign bonds," Derek Halpenny Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi.
"That optimism is persisting today."
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker this week to try and secure more funding from the European Union, International Monetary Fund and ECB, despite falling behind on its debt cut targets.
Investors are also looking for any clues on the ECB's plans for tackling the crisis after it poured cold water on a report suggesting it was considering buying bonds of euro zone countries if their borrowing costs breached a certain level.
Bond markets remained in a cautious mood ahead of an auction of shorter-term 12-18 month debt by Spain, one of the countries now at the centre of the euro zone crisis, later in the morning.
German government bonds, traditionally favoured by risk adverse investors, waned slightly in early trading but kept to its tight recent range.
"We expect Spain to continue outperforming Italy especially in the short end on continued expectations of...(the) EFSF (bailout fund) and ECB support," RBS strategists said in a note.
Oil and gold drifted within recent ranges.

Golf Club Helps Chase Away Would-Be Robbers
The owner of C and S Masterpiece jewelry store in Garden Grove used a six-iron golf club to fight off burglars, one of whom the victim says shocked him with a taser.
Detectives say the robbers were admitted to the store after posing as customers.
"They came in with a piece of jewelry that they brought with them, saying that they wanted to have it modified, maybe some work done on it ," said Lt. Robert Fowler of the Garden Grove Police Department. "That?s how they got the store owner to buzz them into the business."
In a matter of seconds, he says one suspect came after his neck, his head and his shoulder. He says he'll never forget the frightening, repetitive sound of an electric stun gun as it sent jolts through his body.
"Suddenly, one guy has a Taser, a stun gun, or something," said the owner, who did not want to be identified because the alleged robbers are still at large.
In a matter of seconds, he says one suspect came after his neck, his head and his shoulder. He says he'll never forget the frightening, repetitive sound of an electric stun gun as it sent jolts through his body.
Police say marks left on the victim's body were indeed inflicted by an electroshock weapon. Initially, the owner says, he did not feel anything.
"My brain froze maybe, but my body instantly was moving," he said.
He ran to a backroom where he keeps his 6- iron and started fighting off the assailants with his golf club.
"Finally I grabbed my golf club, lucky, thank God," he said. "We fought a little bit and they ran away."
Police say the getaway car was a white, 1994 two-door Honda Civic with the license plate 6JSN612. The car was reported as stolen out of Santa Ana Tuesday.

Facebook investors brace for further losses following end of early backers' lock-in period
London, Aug 14 (ANI): Investors in Facebook, who are still reeling from the social network's disastrous stock market debut, are expecting further losses, as a ban on early backers selling their shares would be lifted this week.
A flood of shares of about 1.9 billion, four times the current publicly traded number, will be released from "lockup", which could further depress stock prices.
"It remains a real risk that shares will be sold on to the market and temporarily depress prices as the market could struggle to absorb an expanded float," The Guardian quoted Brian Wieser of Wall Street research group Pivotal, as saying.
Facebook's high-profile owners, which include Microsoft, Goldman Sachs to U2 frontman Bono's venture capital fund Elevation Partners, would be free to sell the billions' worth of securities, which they held back from the initial public offering (IPO) in May.
According to the paper, the major threat to Facebook shares, whose value has fallen 40 percent in the three months since their debut at 38 dollars at NASDAQ, comes in November, when 1.2 billion shares, many of them belonging to employees and venture capital firms, are released from their trading moratorium.
Pivotal believes that these types of investor could decide to sell up to three-quarters of their holdings.
"This date becomes the greatest wildcard," Wieser said, who believes that a lot depends on Facebook's next set of financial results, expected in October, which should show an acceleration in its rate of growth that is likely to continue until Christmas and beyond, as the company expands its sources of advertising revenue.

Dark chocolate, cocoa compounds, may reduce blood pressure
ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Compounds in cocoa may help to reduce blood pressure, according to a new systematic review in The Cochrane Library. The researchers reviewed evidence from short-term trials in which participants were given dark chocolate or cocoa powder daily and found that their blood pressure dropped slightly compared to a control group.
Cocoa contains compounds called flavanols, thought to be responsible for the formation of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide causes blood vessel walls to relax and open wider, thereby reducing blood pressure. The link between cocoa and blood pressure stems from the discovery that the indigenous people of San Blas Island in Central American, who drink flavanol-rich cocoa drinks every day, have normal blood pressure regardless of age. However, flavanol concentrations in cocoa and chocolate products vary according to cocoa processing procedures and types of chocolate, so it is difficult to establish the optimal dosage for an effect.
To investigate the effect of flavanols on blood pressure, the researchers reviewed data from trials in which people consumed dark chocolate or cocoa powder containing between 30-1080 mg of flavanols in 3-100 g of chocolate each day. Altogether, 856 people were involved in 20 trials lasting 2-8 weeks, or in one case, 18 weeks. Flavanol-rich chocolate or cocoa powder reduced blood pressure on average by 2-3 mm Hg.
?Although we don?t yet have evidence for any sustained decrease in blood pressure, the small reduction we saw over the short term might complement other treatment options and might contribute to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease,? said lead researcher Karin Ried of the National Institute of Integrative Medicine in Melbourne, Australia, who worked with colleagues at the University of Adelaide.
In a subset of trials, when chocolate or cocoa powder was compared to flavanol-free-products as controls, the beneficial effects were more pronounced (3-4 mm Hg), whereas the researchers found no significant effect on blood pressure in the second subset with low-flavanol products as control. It is possible that low-flavanol products also have a small effect on blood pressure, so that it was harder to observe differences between high and low-flavanol products in these trials. However, results of these subsets of trials may have been influenced by trial length and blinding of participants, as trials using flavanol-free control products tended to be of shorter duration with participants knowing their allocated group.
?We?ll also need to see long term trials, including effects on the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease, before we can come to conclusions regarding clinical outcomes and potential side effects of long-term consumption,? said Ried. ?These trials should use flavanol-free products in the control groups to eliminate any potential effects of low-dose flavanol on blood pressure.?
